Sorcha

Attend now the tale of lovely Sorcha of Shadizar.

While the Zamorian nights are known for the nimble-fingered thieves that slink through the alleys of that ancient city, Sorcha has born to a house of riches. Her father’s merchant house was the target of thieves more often than he was called a thief himself for the prices he charged for precious jewels and finely wrought golden trinkets.

In his early days, Mykola the gemcutter traveled foreign lands collecting the treasures of the earth to be tooled into baubles for the princes. Many a hidden temple or vanished outpost were explored by Mykola and his retinue. He took for his bride a daughter of the Old Tarantia, whose talents at forging a ring of gold exceeded even his own. The union of this pair produced a fair dark-eyed daughter of Zamoria, who was more precious that diamonds to her doting parents.

Her lively mind and comely figure made her a welcome addition among the merchants of Shadizar. Sorcha learned about the cut and carets of fine gems from her parents and heard the tales of hidden treasures in the wild lands of the world. Her nimble fingers also learned how to cut a purse from those dark thieves who lurked in poor quarter known for the finest of thieves – the Maul.

But no tale under the sun unfolds without tears and the world rightly knows Shadizar as the City of the Wicked. Sorcha’s mother was found traveling along and was ill-used by the depravities of the Zamorian nobles. A shade of sadness was drawn across the house of Mykola. The patriarch himself took to wine and dice rather than attempting to let his knife drink of noble blood. Within a year, the thieves and cheats of Zamora had brought down the once mighty merchant house of Mykola.

With her mother dead and father lost to her, Sorcha began to run with the dregs of the city, learning to steal. But there are different ways to cut a purse, and a young girl of smooth skin can be used to lure much larger fish. Waylaid by slavers at her father’s door, she was calmed with the juice of the lotus and thrown onto the slavers’ block.
